Is Platelet-Rich Plasma right for me?

Dr. Homer is one of the most experienced and skilled physicians in the Metro Detroit Area providing Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) treatments for diabetic wounds, plantar fascitis, sprained or strained tendons and arthritic joints!

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
Also known as PRP, is the patients own blood plasma with concentrated platelets that contain huge reservoirs of healing growth factors and healing cells that are vital to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration. These bioactive proteins initiate connective tissue healing and repair, promote development of new blood vessels and stimulate the bodies natural healing process for diabetic wounds, plantar fascitis and sprained or strained tendons,, ligaments ans arthritic joints. In fact, Plastic Surgeons are now doing facelifts with PRP!

How Does PRP Therapy Work?
To prepare PRP, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patients arm. The blood is then placed in a special test tube container and then placed into a centrifuge unit which spins the blood at an extremely high rate automatically separating the blood components and producing the PRP. The entire process takes less than 15 minutes and increases the concentration of healing cells and growth factors up to 500%!

Is PRP Right for me?
If you have a non-healing wound, plantar fasciitis, or a tendon or ligament injury and traditional methods have not provided relief, then PRP therapy may be the solution. The procedure is less aggressive and less expensive than surgery. It will heal tissue with minimal or no scarring and alleviates further degeneration of the tissues. There will be an initial evaluation with the doctor to see if PRP therapy is right for you.

PRP can be helpful for the treatment of conditions associated with:

  • Diabetic and non-healing wounds
  • Arthritic joints
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Achilles tendonitis

What are the Potential Benefits of Treatment?
Most patients experience a significant improvement in symptoms and a remarkable return of function very quickly! This may eliminate the need for more aggressive treatments such as long term medication or surgery.

How Many Treatments & How Often is This Therapy?
While responses to treatment vary, often only 1 treatment is all that is necessary, however some patients will require 3-6 sets of treatments. There is no limit to the number of treatments you can have. The risks and side effects are virtually non-existent and do not increase with the number of treatments.

Are there any special instructions?
You are restricted from the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) for 2 weeks prior to the procedure and throughout the course of treatments. Initially the procedure may cause some localized soreness and discomfort. Few patients only require some extra-strength Tylenol to help with the pain. Ice and heat may be applied to the area as needed.

How soon can I go back to regular physical activities?
PRP therapy helps regenerate soft tissue, tendons and ligaments but it is not a quick fix. This therapy is stimulating the bodies natural growth and repair. Through regular visits, Dr. Homer and his qualified staff will determine when you are able to resume regular physical activities.
